Американский антрополог Нельсон Грабурн считает туристические поездки современным эквивалентом священных празднеств. В наши дни для человека время делится на повседневную жизнь, полную забот и тягот, и "настоящую жизнь", которая достается ценой 11 месяцев напряженного труда. Граница между этими двумя жизнями обставлена ритуалами перехода (сборы, получение визы, перевод часов в самолете) и ритуалами возвращения (вручение подарков, демонстрация фотографий и сувениров).
Само путешествие обычно проходит в режиме, который психиатры называют измененным состоянием сознания: чрезмерное возбуждение и напряжение, эйфория, к которым добавляется потребление некоторой дозы спиртного. "Жизнь большинства людей расписана по минутам, подчинена зарабатыванию денег и ужасно однообразна", — говорит психолог Соня Фридман (Sonya Friedman).
"Поэтому, несмотря на частые разочарования, расходы, бытовые неудобства и реальные опасности, нынешний турист продолжает стремиться к неизведанным красотам природы и культуры. Но поэтому и истории загорелых, сияющих довольством отпускников не радуют слушателей".

Путешественникам надо задуматься об истинной мотивации своей потребности делиться впечатлениями об отпуске. Слушатель уловит в вашем рассказе даже подсознательное чувство превосходства, говорит Дженнифер Крокер (Jennifer Crocker), профессор психологии из Мичиганского университета. И постарается быстро закончить разговор, чувствуя досаду или раздражение.
Ее совет для путешественников, жаждущих поделиться впечатлениями, состоит в том, чтобы подумать об истинных причинах стремления рассказать всем вокруг о своей поездке. Если Вашим основным стимулом является конструирование образа самих себя как свободных, благополучных, удачливых, компетентных и достойных уважения людей, пожалуй, лучшее, что Вы можете сделать — держать рот на замке.
Лучшая аудитория туриста — люди, собирающиеся туда, откуда Вы только что вернулись, или те, кто уже был в том же самом месте. Если же таковых в Вашем окружении не находится, посетите Интернет-форумы и оставьте там отчет о поездке, советует Крокер. Это самый доступный способ "конвертации" индивидуального воспоминания в признак социального статуса без ущерба для окружающих, считает она.
